Used prices jump in Australia after Tesla cancels Model S, offers new incentives in US

Tesla’s decision last Friday to cancel deliveries of new Model S and Model X deliveries in Australia appear to have had an immediate impact on the second hand market, with prices jumping as frustrated customers turn to other options.

Tesla told customers in Australia and other right hand drive markets that that production of its flagship, premium models would not resume in RHD markets. Customers, some of whom had made their deposits nearly three years ago, were told they would be refunded, and get a $3,000 discount if they bought  a Model 3 or Model Y in the next six months.

On the back of this news, it appears prices of some used vehicles have already gone up. One example of this is a 2019 Tesla Model S 100D which increased in asking price by 30 per cent to $129,999.

This car was priced at $99,999 only a couple of weeks ago and the latest price increase of $30,000 makes it one of the more expensive Mode S vehicles in the country.

On the same day, as it cancelled the orders in RHD markets, Tesla announced new incentives for Model S and Model X customers in the US.

These incentives included a lower attractive finance rate, free supercharging and a Tesla referral program with a chance to win a new Cybertruck.

Lower Finance Rate

On Tesla’s US Model S & Model X website, prospective customers will be offered a rate as low as 3.99% on finance, although this would not be available in all states.

On top of this, Tesla is now offering unlimited supercharging to new customers.

Free supercharging was on offer for many Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles delivered to Australia in the EV-only brand’s early years. Over time, this incentive had been pulled away.

Now, it seems unlimited supercharging is back for new US customers. Tesla is offering up to three years of free unlimited supercharging to new Model S and Model X customers if they purchase a vehicle by June 30, 2023.

On the Tesla US website, it’s stated:

“Customers who order and take delivery of a new Model S or Model X vehicle between April 20, 2023 and June 30, 2023, are eligible for unlimited three years of free Supercharging on their new vehicle.”

One additional sweetener is the addition of the Tesla referral program where a new prize is also on offer for those that participate in it.

New purchases of Model S or Model X vehicles are getting up to 6,000 loyalty credits, and 3,500 referral credits are also on offer for these vehicles.

Participants of the referral program can also win a Tesla Cybertruck if they chose to enter a raffle with 500 of these credits. This would be one of the initial production Cybertrucks to come off Tesla’s GigaTexas production line.

New buyers or existing owners with referral credits can enter this Cybertruck raffle multiple times if they have sufficient credit to enter. It also does not require any pre-commitments like a Cybertruck reservation number for participants to win.
