Tesla’s Austin Gigafactory in Texas has reached a production rate of 5,000 electric vehicles per week, a significant milestone for the new factory.
The gigantic factory, which currently only produces Tesla’s Model Y will also start production of the Cybertruck this year with analysts predicting 450,000 units of the all-electric pickup truck by 2027.
The milestone comes just 2 months after Tesla’s Berlin factory also hit a weekly production rate of 5000.
Both Giga Berlin and Giga Texas have ramped production rapidly over the past 12 months. If the Berlin factory maintains its growth rate it could hit 10,000 units per week by the end of the year.
While Berlin has been ahead of Austin in the Model Y production ramp, the Texas factory has been producing some cars with the new structural battery pack and 4680 battery cells. Ironing out the new manufacturing process has resulted in a slower growth rate but it seems the challenges are being met.
The production milestone comes in the same week that Tesla broke ground on construction of its new lithium refinery which is also in Texas.
Elon Musk arrived at the refinery ground breaking event in a Cybertruck built at the Austin factory.
