Rimac, the Croatia electric hypercar maker is moving into energy storage technologies with a new division that will include megawatt scale charging solutions.

The company is owned by a Bugatti-Rimac partnership. After finding success in the electric hypercar space, Rimac Technology is now launching the Rimac Energy division to create next-generation stationary Energy Storage Systems (ESS).

The performance electric vehicle brand’s Energy ESS is developed using a unique electrical architecture that allows for 50% reduced energy losses and up to 40% reduction in the physical footprint of the system.

The Rimac Energy team has sprouted out of the Rimac Technology division over the last 18 months and has grown to 60 employees with a focus on the company’s upcoming ESS products.

“We recognize the importance of stationary storage solutions to power our planet sustainably,” Rimac Energy director Wasim Sarwar said. “Given our track record in innovative battery technology, we believe we will play a vital role in building Europe’s future energy ecosystems, elevating it on the global stage.”

Rimac Energy’s product portfolio will be focusing on:

  • Utility-scale ESS
  • Commercial applications
  • Industrial applications
  • Integrated battery-buffered charging systems (including Megawatt charging)

According to the new division, one of the key differentiating factors is that all products will be designed, developed and manufactured in Europe.

Rimac Group founder and CEO, Mate Rimac said there is an urgent need for clean energy infrastructure to support the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid by providing storage and balancing capabilities.

“Given our head start in EV technology and dedication to sustainability, this path feels like a seamless progression for us. Our team is truly excited about creating solutions that make clean energy more accessible, as we strive to decrease our dependence on fossil fuels and foster a greener future.”

First pilot systems are expected to be deployed to selected customers in 2023 with commissioning occurring next year.

Following these deployments, the High volume ESS production will begin in Europe in 2025 at Rimac’s Campus in Croatia with a target of 10 GWh of annual production.

Details of this new technology will be announced later in 2023.
