Polestar plans Australia’s first “pure electric vehicle drive-in cinema event”

Premium electric carmaker Polestar says it is planning an exclusive EV-only drive-in cinema experience for Sydney residents in May, along with onsite battery-operated charging.

While this is not the first time Australian EV owners will have the chance to visit the drive-in and charge at the same time – the Dromana 3 Drive-In was the first – Polestar is billing the popup drive-in cinema as an Australian first “pure electric vehicle drive-in cinema event”.

Set to take place over four nights in early May, the popup cinema will be located on the rooftop of the Entertainment Quarter car park in Moore Park, Sydney.

Drivers of an EV will have “exclusive access” to the event where battery-powered generators will offer silent charging while the movies play.

The four nights will show four different movies:

  • Thursday 4th May – Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre
  • Friday 5th May – Avatar 2: The Way of Water
  • Saturday 6th May – The Super Mario Bros. Movie
  • Sunday 7th May – Dirty Dancing

A range of snacks and drinks will be available to purchase on the night, while tickets can be booked via movincar.com.au.

“Polestar is all about redefining norms and reimagining the world around us in a more sustainable way,” said Jonathan Williams, head of marketing at Polestar Australia.

“Electrifying the drive-in seemed like a great way to bring this concept to life.”

However, as already mentioned, Polestar is nevertheless arriving nearly a year late to the game, after the Dromana 3 Drive-In, located on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, claimed last year to be the world’s first drive-in to provide EV charging for patrons.

Located just off the end of the Peninsula Link freeway, the Dromana 3 Drive-In began operating six new EV chargers in the middle of 2022, though EV owners need to bring their own Type 2 charging cable.
