Japanese automaker Nissan has offered us a brief glimpse of an electric prototype of its iconic Skyline, though there’s not quite enough detail to get overly excited yet.
Nissan posted to its official Japanese Twitter account this week a brief teaser video with the promise that “Nissan will take on the challenge of building an EV prototype of the R32 Skyline GT-R.”
While the video shows the rear end of a Skyline, it’s obviously still an early idea for Nissan, considering the presence of a tailpipe and the growly engine sounds typical of a Skyline.
According to Nissan, development of the prototype electric Skyline is being led by an engineer who joined the company “out of admiration” for the Skyline GT-R, adding that the initiative “started with the desire to build a more exciting car with the latest electrification technology involved.”
There are no additional details or promises, but the move could be a good one for Nissan, who has yet to set the electric motoring world ablaze, despite its long term commitment to the Nissan Leaf.
A relatively lacklustre electrification strategy unveiled in February has only targeted 19 new electric vehicles by 2030, bumping the company’s “electrification mix” up to 55%.
Nissan followed up in March by announcing its so-called “X-in-1” powertrain development, a modularised system which will allow both EVs and hybrid models to be produced on the same production line.
An electric prototype of one of the company’s most well-known vehicles, however, might kick-start a change in Nissan’s focus and gin up excitement in potential future Nissan EVs.
