2024 Hyundai Kona electric specs revealed: A sleeker yet roomier SUV

The bigger, more feature-rich upgrade to the Hyundai Kona Electric was announced just before Christmas last year when the design was officially unveiled.

Now Hyundai has released the detailed specs of the new Kona which has an EV-first-inspired design. The new design is expected to be bigger in most dimensions when compared to the current Kona Electric.

At the release of the specifications of the new Kona Electric, Hyundai’s President and CEO, Jaehoon Chang, described where Hyundai sits in the EV race:

“Kona Electric will play a major role alongside our Ioniq models in reinforcing Hyundai’s EV leadership. The new model builds on the great reputation of the first-generation Kona Electric and is designed and engineered to lead the competition with its many outstanding features,”

He continued to elaborate on the progress the brand is making on electrification:

“At Hyundai, we don’t see the EV revolution as just the latest trend. We believe it is a pivot point for not only the industry but also for society. Through the implementation of eco-friendly mobility solutions like our EVs, we hope to speed the transition to clean mobility and make progress for humanity.”

To kick things off, the new 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric will be available in two variants:

  • Standard Range
  • Long Range

The Standard Range variant comes equipped with a 48.4 kWh battery pack while the Long Range version is offered with a larger 65.4 kWh battery pack.

The long-range version with the 65.4 kWh battery can provide a WLTP-estimated range of up to 490 km which Hyundai claims is a class-leading EV range based on European specifications.

The batteries can be fast-charged from 10 % to 80 % in 41 minutes.

The long-range model offers up to 160 kW while the standard range is capped at 114.6 kW. Both versions offer 255 Nm of peak torque.

Dimensions-wise, the new Kona Electric has grown. It now sits at:

  • Length: 4,355 mm (175 mm longer than the previous generation in 2017)
  • Width: 1,825 mm (25 mm wider)
  • Height: 1,575 mm (20 mm taller)

On the outside, the new headlights and taillights look sleeker and offer a more aerodynamic look to the SUV body. Staying on the outside, the new Kona also comes with 19-inch alloy wheels.

This is seen in the low coefficient of drag which sits just at 0.27, making the new Kona look more aerodynamic in its styling.

On the inside, there is a large 12.3-inch screen with a floating layout. Ambient lighting is also on offer.

The inside of the new Kona Electric is also roomier. The fully foldable second row of seats when folded can provide up to 466 litres of boot space.

One of the key features that the Hyundai electric car range has on offer is the ability to offer Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality. This is part of the bi-directional charging option that is available on the range of newer EVs from the brand. It’s ideal for camping or powering devices on the go.

The new Kona Electric also comes with bi-directional charging thanks to its onboard system. It can power any device or charge electrical equipment, with both interior and exterior outlets for convenience. On the outside, devices and home appliances can be plugged in using a V2L adapter to use battery power when the car is parked which is ideal on road trips.

One-pedal driving is also on offer with its new i-Pedal system which enables a driving mode that allows drivers to accelerate, decelerate and stop using only the accelerator pedal. The regeneration system on the Kona Electric will automatically adjust the amount of regenerative braking based on information from the traffic flow ahead.

On the safety and driver convenience front, there are plenty of features on offer which includes:

  • Driver Status Monitor (DSM)
  • Blind-spot View Monitor (BVM)
  • Forward Collision-avoidance Assist 2.0 (FCA 2.0)
  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA)
  • Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA)
  • Driver Attention Warning (DAW)
  • High Beam Assist (HBA)
  • Smart Cruise Control (SCC)
  • Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC)
  • Lane Following Assist (LFA)
  • Highway Driving Assist (HDA)

Production of the new Kona is expected to begin later in 2023 with more announcements to follow closer to local launch.
