The Polestar 3, the luxury electric SUV first unveiled in October last year by the Sweden-based EV maker, has finally released its pricing details for Australia and opened its order book for an official launch aimed at the first quarter of 2024.
More than 7,000 Australians have expressed their interest in the all-electric SUV, the successor to the popular and well-received Polestar 2 electric sedan, but it does not come cheap.
It starts at $132,900 excluding on-road costs. This is for the Long-range Dual motor edition, which packs 360 kW of power.
The top-of-the-range Polestar 3, Long range Dual motor with Performance Pack comes in at $141,900 plus on-roads. The Performance pack adds more power to the dual-electric motors to help them produce up to 380 kW of power and 910 Nm of torque.
Both versions are powered by a 111kWh battery pack which can deliver up to 610 km WLTP, range.
With “Scandinavian minimalism” at the heart of its design, it includes a huge list of standard equipment, including:
- Air suspension
- Full-length panoramic glass roof
- LED lighting inside and out
- Retractable door handles with proximity sensing
- 21-inch alloy wheels
The Plus Pack and Pilot Pack are fitted as standard to the first model year of the Australian-delivered EVs which include more features, including:
- 25-speaker audio system from Bowers & Wilkins with 3D surround sound with Dolby Atmos capability
- Soft-closing doors
- Head-up display
- Pilot Assist.
A heat pump is also included as standard with the all-electric SUV which utilises the ambient heat for climate and battery pre-conditioning. This makes Polestar 3 quite efficient, particularly in colder climates.
“Polestar 3 is a highly anticipated addition to the Polestar range in this market,” the head of Polestar Australia Samantha Johnson said. “Last year, SUVs represented 53% of new vehicle sales in Australia, a tally that has more than doubled since 2010.”
“We know Australians want more electric vehicles that are ‘fit for purpose’ and with Polestar 3 we will deliver just that – a new, premium benchmark for driving excellence, technological integration and sustainability for the electric age.”
Sustainability has played a key role in the design and upcoming manufacturing of the Polestar 3.
Part of the sustainability includes the tracing of key raw materials including Cobalt, Lithium, Mica, Nickel and Leather, with conflict mineral reporting on tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold.
Australian customers are also able to order the optional Pilot Pack which includes:
- LiDAR from Luminar, which adds an additional control unit from NVIDIA
- Three cameras
- Four ultrasonic sensors
- Cleaning for the front and rear-view cameras, providing accurate real-time data about the car’s surroundings, especially in the long-range field.
Vehicles ordered with LiDAR are expected to arrive from Q3 2024.
SUVs make up a large proportion of the local market and the luxury EV space will only grow in the coming years. With Polestar expanding its SUV range in the coming years is a good sign for the EV options available to Australian drivers.
