After going on sale last month, Cupra’s battery electric hatchback model, the Born, has now secured nearly 350 orders in Australia.

Cupra has also revealed that the brand has more than 2,000 orders across its range of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) and all-electric range.

“For Cupra’s customers, almost all of whom are private rather than fleet buyers, BEV technology is affordable and the ultimate solution to removing fuel costs and tailpipe emissions,” Cupra Australia Ben Wilks said.

“For them, and a growing number of Australians, no considerations could be more critical.”

He went on to speak about the demand that Cupra is seeing from its customers around pure battery electric vehicles:

“As a brand, we are moving quickly into a fully electrified future, and the response to the Cupra Born demonstrates that Australians have a voracious appetite for plug-in models that both reduce their emissions, are stylish and fun to drive.

Being compact, rear-wheel drive, with instant torque and teamed with a long 500km-plus range places the Born in a unique position in the market – and all for less than $60,000 before on-road costs.”

The Cupra Born delivers around 500 km of range from its 82 kWh battery pack and accelerates to 100 km/h in 7 seconds, which is slower than a Model Y but fast than a VW ID.4.

The same battery pack can be fast charged at up to 170 kW which is one of the highest charging rates for smaller EVs in Australia. Tesla Model 3 is the other sedan that can charge higher than the Born with a cap of 250 kW of DC fast charging at Tesla’s V3 Superchargers.

The Cupra Born prices start at $59,990 before on-roads. This makes the electric hatch a bit of a game changer given the relatively high range that it delivers.

As of 19th January, Cupra has 343 orders on the Born with a plan to get up to 400 orders that form the first batch. This batch is expected to be delivered in late March or early April this year.

We look forward to test-driving it in the coming months and seeing what it’s like to own one in Australia.
