Panasonic Energy has signed a multi year agreement to supply batteries to American EV manufacturer Lucid Group to be used for the automaker’s full line-up including the Lucid Air and the upcoming Gravity SUV.
The newly announced partnership serves to further guarantee Panasonic Energy’s expansion out of Japan and into the United States.
“With the increased electrification of the automotive market, partnerships with technology-leading EV manufacturers such as Lucid are critical to our mission,” said Kazuo Tadanobu, president and CEO of Panasonic Energy.
“This partnership will help us drive growth of the lithium-ion battery industry and accelerate the world towards a net-zero emissions future.”
Officially unveiled in 2020, the Lucid Air electric sedan is the company’s flagship model, with the first models hitting the streets in late-2021. Boasting a record-shattering 837km of range (EPA), well and truly exceeding what is possible in the company’s rival Tesla models.
Meanwhile, Lucid unveiled last month more details about its upcoming Gravity SUV, with reservations expected to be opening in early 2023.
Planned for delivery in 2024, the Lucid Gravity will boast a similarly breathtaking range akin to the Lucid Air, while offering flexible seating for five, six, or seven adults in two- and three-row seating configurations.
Featuring “next-generation Glass Cockpit high-resolution displays” operating the next generation of the Lucid UX software interface, teasing images from Lucid also hint at a panoramic view through all-around windows.
“Panasonic is a fantastic partner with both innovative technology and depth of experience,” said Peter Rawlinson, Lucid’s CEO and CTO.
“This agreement will help us meet the growing demand for lithium-ion batteries as we continue to ramp production of the full Lucid Air line-up in 2023 and expect to begin production of our Gravity SUV in 2024.”
