American automotive icon General Motors may have just given us a tease of a potential electric Chevy Malibu sedan during its China Tech Vision Day.
GM’s China Tech Vision Day event highlighted four future EV models, including three models we already knew were on the horizon – the Cadillac Lyriq, GMC Hummer EV, and Buick Electra-X.
However, GM also unveiled the FNR-XE, a “pure electric concept car” based on GM’s Ultium platform.
While the presentation was focused on GM cars being released in China through its local partner SAIC, GM’s president Mark Reuss is quoted as saying that the FNR-XE will enter the same mid-size segment as the current Chevy Malibu.
When asked whether the Chevy FNR-XE would be seen in the US, Reuss said only that the company would wait to “see the desirability”.
In its own press announcement, GM described the Chevy FNR-XE as the brand’s “new generation of electric intelligent connected vehicles custom developed for the Chinese market.”
“GM is accelerating the introduction of Ultium-empowered EVs in China to support the market’s move toward an all-electric future,” said Julian Blissett, GM executive vice president and president of GM China.
“Through global collaboration and local integration, we are unlocking a transformative experience with real-world benefits for our customers through zero-emission driving.”

Meanwhile, having already seen a lot of the Cadillac Lyriq and GMC Hummer EV, GM’s Vision Day also promised that the first Ultium-based Buick model, the Buick Electra-X Concept SUV, will debut in China later this year.
