Tesla has showcased one of its newest colours at an auto show in Zurich, Switzerland. It came in the form of a Berlin-built Tesla Model Y in Quicksilver paint. Deliveries of vehicles with this paint colour are expected to start in November. Some photos were shared by AllThingsTSLA on Twitter.Ā

Visitors to the show have been uploading pictures and videos of the colour which happens to be the darker Midnight Silver Metallic paint Model 3.Ā

Tesla describes this paint colour as ā€œA dynamic, liquid metal effect colour that accentuates the shape of Model Yā€. It appears brighter and offers a Cybertruck body-like sheen under low lighting.

This is one of the two unique paints to be offered in cars produced at Tesla’s GigaBerlin factory. The other is Midnight Cherry Red.

These colours are achieved by layering multiple coats of paint that change with the light. As Tesla puts it:

ā€œDeveloped in our advanced paint shop at Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, the colours are designed to accentuate your Model Y under every sky. From bright highlights to dark tones, our multi-coat paint adds a new dimension that subtly changes with curvature as you walk around your Tesla.ā€

Tesla is known to do things differently regarding how it manufactures its vehicles compared to legacy automotive companies. One of these key differences is the limited amount of colours a customer can choose.Ā

At the moment, these paints are only available in Europe and the Middle East.Ā

With new colours available from newer Tesla factories, upgrades may be on the cards for Tesla’s other factories like GigaShanghai and Fremont over the coming years.Ā

One thing is for sure, just like the multi-coat red that Tesla currently offers for a premium, it’s unlikely that these will be a hit in Australia. Last month, the multi-colour red made up only 7% of Tesla models delivered to NSW.

The Driven’s view: It’s great to see Tesla innovating in paint technologies and offering an alternative to what is being offered by most manufacturers of premium vehicles. We look forward to seeing some of these new colours on our roads over the next few years.
