On the back of rising energy costs, many more people are making the switch to EVs in Queensland. New data reveals the growth of the first ground-up affordable EV thatās eligible for the sunshine stateās EV subsidy.
New data from carloop reveals the rapid uptake of affordable ground-up EVs in Queensland. BYDās affordable EV, the Atto 3 more than doubled its sales in October, rising by 103% month-on-month.Ā
After launching in Queensland back in July, BYD delivered 154 new EVs in the state during October. That’s up from 76 in the previous month. September was its first full month of deliveries in Australia. This has ensured the company has quickly become Australiaās second-best-selling EV brand, behind Tesla.
BYDās Atto 3 has been largely a success with thousands of customers placing orders earlier this year. In Queensland, the BYD Atto 3 is the first ground-up EV under $50,000 to be eligible for Queenslandās EV rebate scheme.Ā
Unlike other states, Queenslandās EV rebate price cap has been set lower at $58,000 which excludes other ground-up EVs like the very popular Tesla Model 3.
This has led to Queenslanders looking for more affordable options to make the most of the rebate on offer. BYD Atto 3ās growth in the state shows that the upward adoption trends in the state are expected to continue from here.
Tesla, on the other hand, saw 376 EV deliveries to Queensland customers during October. The most interesting trend happens to be the split between SUV and Sedan deliveries.
Teslaās Model 3 sedan makes up only 3% of deliveries
New data also shows that only 3.4% of all EVs delivered by Tesla were its best-selling EV sedan, the Model 3. Thatās out of the 379 EVs Tesla delivered to customers in Queensland during October.
This falls in line with the trends seen in other Australian states in recent months. Teslaās backlog on Model 3 deliveries still sits around February this year for most order holders. Deliveries of the Tesla Model 3 have slowed but are expected to increase again before Christmas.Ā
More EVs hitting Queensland roads sooner
With the rising fuel prices and ample surplus solar in Queensland, the rise in EV uptake is happening much faster in Queensland than in some other parts of the country.Ā
As more affordable newer EVs like the BYD Atto 3 hit the stateās roads, weāre likely to see more sharp rises in EV uptake. We predict another 1,500 EVs to be on Queensland roads in the last 2 months of 2022 before things really take off in 2023.
