Kia to offer battery conditioning update for older EV6 models

South Korean automaker Kia is offering a battery conditioning software update for older models of its EV6 crossover which will enable cars to charge even faster in colder conditions.

Kia’s battery conditioning feature is fitted as standard on its 2023 EV6 models, including the new EV6 GT and all new Niro EV, however it was not included for 2022 EV6 models.

Now, however, Kia is offering the optional retrofit as a software update for all 2022 EV6 models. Kia promises that the update will help overcome the slower charging speeds that can occur in BEVs in colder temperatures.

Battery charging times rely on a mixture of factors to deliver added range, but those factors can shift depending on factors like the weather. Under optimal conditions, the Kia EV6 can charge from 10% to 80% in as little as 18 minutes thanks to its 800V ultra-fast charging technology.

However, when the temperature drops to 5 degrees centigrade, that same charge can take as long as 35 minutes for 2022 EV6 models without the battery conditioning feature.

Specifically, battery conditioning ensures optimal battery operating temperature and unlocks up to 50% improved charging time.

Kia’s battery conditioning feature will begin preheating the battery when the satellite navigation system is set to drive to a DC fast charger.

The system also automatically takes into account whether the temperature is below 21 degrees, and whether the state-of-charge is 24% or higher. The conditioning naturally deactivates automatically when the battery reaches optimal operating temperature.

Those looking to upgrade their vehicle with the new battery conditioning software update are advised to contact their local Kia dealership.

“The EV6 has won awards and plaudits for its impressive ultra-fast charging performance, real-world driving range of up to 528km (WLTP), and class-leading space and technology,” said Alexandre Papapetropoulos, director of product and pricing at Kia Europe.

“We are constantly looking at ways of improving our products, and with the new battery conditioning upgrade any existing EV6 customer can benefit from even faster cool-weather charging times – particularly useful as temperatures drop.

“Simple and intuitive to use, this new feature will ensure drivers can spend less time charging and more time enjoying the journey. This initiative underscores our commitment to maximise the ownership experience for all customers.”
