GM unveils new electric ute with 640kms range, and big towing capacity

General Motors’ ute and truck division GMC has unveiled the Sierra EV, an electric ute with 640km of range and a towing capacity of 4,309kg.

The new ute will be launched in the brand’s flagship Denali Edition 1 variant in early 2024, and priced at a hefty $US107,000 before on-road costs (which converts to around $A170,000).

Thankfully, cheaper variants will be announced closer to production.  This will include the Sierra EV AT4 and Elevation trims, which will be introduced in the 2025 model year.

“This is the Denali of EVs — and a truck that is every bit a GMC,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC.

“That means it leaves nothing on the table when it comes to hauling, towing and overall power while unlocking even more possibilities around what a GMC pickup can offer.”

Featuring an 800V Ultium battery pack with 350kW charging on a DC fast charger, the Sierra EV can add 160km of range in around 10 minutes. The Onboard Power Station Pro also enables the car to be turned into a mobile power source, providing up to 10.2kW of off-board power.

Inside, a 16.8-inch touchscreen is the largest ever seen in a Sierra. The interior is upholstered in premium materials and a new panoramic fixed glass roof and pillar-to-pillar windscreen provides a great view as you drive.

“This truck is everything customers know about the Sierra, but is so much more,” said Nichole Kraatz, chief engineer, GM Battery Electric Trucks.

“Leveraging GM’s dedicated Ultium pickup platform, it takes the Sierra franchise to new benchmarks of capability, versatility and luxury — all in a zero-tailpipe-emissions package.”

The pending launch of the Sierra EV also means that GMC becomes the only brand to offer three all-electric trucks, with the Sierra EV joining the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and SUV.
