Iconic American automaker Ford announced this week that it has tripled electric vehicle (EV) sales in the United States during September, led by the F-150 Lightning pickup/ute.
As is being seen around the world, total car sales for Ford in September were down overall. Total car sales for September fell by 8.9% compared to September 2021. But the good news is that Ford EV sales bucked the trend.
Total Ford EV sales in September increased by 197.3% over the same month last year, growing to 4,691.
Leading the way was the F-150 Lightning, which continues as the country’s best-selling electric pickup. Since its launch in June, Ford has sold a total of 8,760 units. With numbers like that, it’s unsurprising that the Lightning is one of Ford’s fastest-turning vehicles on dealer lots, averaging only 8 days.
Ford’s share of the US electric vehicle market increased by 3% over September 2021, reaching 7%.
In addition to the popular Lightning, Ford’s electric E-Transit commercial van on its own secured a 90% share of the overall electric van market. Through September, Ford sold 4,387 E-Transit vans.
And Ford’s electric sales numbers are set to continue to grow, thanks to New York City. Specifically, according to Ford, New York City now operates 200 Mustang Mach-Es in its fleet, and has made its largest purchase of medium-duty EVs with an order for 300 E-Transits and F-150 Lightnings.
“Ford continued to see high-demand vehicles turning at record rates in September, while developing electric truck and van leadership and extending our overall truck leadership,” said Andrew Frick, vice president of sales, distribution & trucks for Ford Blue.
