EV uptake is starting to take off all around the country, with Tesla leading the pack so far in 2022. New data now shows a similar trend in Victoria where Tesla uptake has jumped more than threefold in August when compared with the same time last year.
Today I look into the soaring uptake trends from August and where the Victorian EV uptake is heading in 2022.
Tesla Victorian uptake soars past 220% in August 2022
New data from carloop reveals a sharp rise in Tesla uptake in the state, up by 220% in August when compared to the same month last year. A total of 953 new Teslas ended up being delivered in the second largest populated state for the month after NSW.
This means August Tesla deliveries in Victoria were 10% above all the Teslas delivered in the whole of 2020. In 2020, Tesla delivered 863 EVs in Victoria.
Trends also reveal the first Victorian customer deliveries of the recently launched Tesla Model Y and the breakdown of the two models on offer in the state paints a picture of what’s to come.
Nearly 30% of Victorian delivered Teslas were Model Ys
Breaking the new data down on Tesla EV uptake in Victoria shows that nearly 30% of all the EVs Tesla delivered in August were the family-friendly, more spacious yet more expensive Model Y. The remaining 70.1% were Australia’s best-selling EV, the Tesla Model 3 sedan.
The Model Y is not eligible for the $3,000 EV purchase subsidy in Victoria due to it exceeding the state rebate threshold of $68,740 but this has clearly not put a dent in the strong demand for this model in the state.
Last week I also touched on the Queensland uptake and how the Model Y took 32% of the delivery share in the sunshine state during August. At this stage, Tesla deliveries of the Model Ys are nudging those in Victoria.
There is also another trend worth paying attention to. That’s the rise of affordable EVs and the impact they would have on the Victorian EV uptake moving forward in the rest of 2022 and beyond.
BYD’s Affordable EV is now also on Victorian roads
The first two BYD Atto 3s also made it onto Victorian roads during August according to the new data. This is a pretty significant milestone for affordable EVs in the state.
It’s a sign of what’s to come with the deliveries of the first ground-up EVs being delivered to Victorian customers in September and ramping up over the coming months.
This is really exciting news for thousands of people around the country looking to get behind the wheel of their first new EV and with affordable EVs like the BYD Atto 3 commencing customer deliveries, people will have many more ground-up EV options in the coming years.
