What BYD’s Thailand plans might mean for Australia’s EV supply

BYD is seeing a huge increase in its EV orders this year. To keep up with this demand, BYD is set to increase its production capacity with upgrades to existing plants and open new ones too. 

This week WHA Group, an industrial facility developer in Thailand, announced that it will build an EV manufacturing plant according to a Reuters report.

Huge growth and plans for Asia and the Asia Pacific

BYD is seeing a huge increase in its EV orders this year, from many parts of the world including in the Australian market with thousands of orders on the most affordable ground-up EV in the market, the Atto 3. 

Locally, BYD has started delivering their Atto 3 EV to Australian customers in the last week with hundreds more deliveries on the cards over the coming weeks. 

Last month, BYD announced plans to launch their new EV line-up in Thailand including the Atto 3 which arrived in Australia and New Zealand first. With those announcements out of the way, now the plans to build EVs are starting to be solidified. 

With Australia already having a free trade agreement with Thailand, this could be significant for EV uptake here in years to come.

With some of the most popular cars and utes, like the Ford Ranger, in Australia currently being built in Thailand, this could be a significant step forward to increase the local supply of EVs too. 

BYD builds 1,000,000 vehicles in 2022 as local deliveries ramp

BYD has now produced 1,000,000 cars in 2022 which is a pretty big milestone for the rapidly growing NEV (New Energy Vehicles) maker as they set to expand in multiple new markets at the same time. 

This is a significant milestone for BYD and with deliveries beginning fairly quickly all around Australia this week as well. Social media reports indicate that deliveries of the Atto 3 in Queensland also took place yesterday. 

South Australian customers also got to see the EVs at the BYD experience centre which is gearing up for customer deliveries in that state.

There is also a launch event planned for the first Victorian order holders this evening which is also a good step forward for the brand’s expansion in the second biggest EV market in the country.

With demand being high and fuel excise reduction to be removed this month, affordable EVs like those from BYD are only set to grow in popularity all across Australia over the coming months.
