Polestar confirms production of hardtop convertible electric roadster

Swedish electric car maker Polestar has confirmed plans to put its performance roadster concept into production, with an expected launch date sometime in 2026 of what will be known as the Polestar 6.

The Volvo and Geely subsidiary says the decision to hit go on production of the electric roadster, originally conceieved as the Polestar O₂, was influenced by “overwhelming” customer and media interest in the concept for the hard-top convertible.

And while four years is a long wait, Polestar says all those interested customers can get online and reserve a build slot, effective immediately, as long as they are doing so from an active Polestar market.

“Polestar 6 is a perfect combination of powerful electric performance and the thrill of fresh air with the top down,” said CEO Thomas Ingenlath in a statement on Wednesday.

“With the overwhelming consumer and press response, we took the decision to put this stunning roadster into production and I am so excited to make it a reality.”

The car maker says the Polestar 6 will be built on its bespoke bonded aluminium platform and feature the high-performance, 800-volt electric architecture already confirmed for Polestar 5, itself debuted in late June.

This includes output of up to 650 kW (884 hp) and 900 Nm from a dual motor powertrain, a targeted 0-100 km/h sprint time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h.

Polestar says further technical details and specifications will be revealed and updated as the production car “becomes reality,” in the lead-up up to the expected launch in 2026.

As The Driven has reported, Polestar has so far released the Polestar 2 – 100 of which were delivered to Australia in July, alone – and is gearing up to roll out the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 electric SUVs.

Like the Polestar 5, the 6 uses a new powertrain developed by Polestar’s UK team, with a unique bonded aluminium chassis and a new rear electric motor providing superior output.
