Mazda MX-30 road test: A triumph of style over efficiencyThe Mazda MX-30 Electric, which only launched in Australia last year, has seen massive discounts of up to 20% off the recommended retail price for some units being sold as demonstrator models, going against the recent trend of car price rises.
As Riz Akhtar has reported previously, popular electric models such as the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 have been advertised in near new condition with asking prices as much as $30,000 new.
Almost two-dozen Mazda MX-30 Electric models are up for sale on the classifieds website Carsales, advertised as ‘demonstrator’ models with between 200km and 2,000km on the odometer.
Most notable, though, is the pricing.
The Mazda MX-30 Electric went on sale in 2021 priced between $69,400 and $74,000 drive-away, a more expensive direct competitor to the Hyundai Kona Electric.
However, the MX-30 has suffered from a small 35.5kWh battery, and a lack of range – estimated at around 224kms – around half the range of other electric cars in the same price range.
Mazda only imported 100 of the MX-30 into Australia in 2021, and Carsales prices for “demonstrator” models with as little as 200km on the odometer are selling for as little as $55,990 – well down on the $70,000+ price the car landed with.
Mazda US sales numbers showed only 8 MX-30 sold for the whole month of July, suggesting that it is not only in Australia that the Mazda MX-30 is failing to excite customers.
