For the first time, there are more than 300 used Model 3s for sale on the local secondhand car market, as Tesla commences delivery of new Model Ys for the first time in Australia.
Tesla Model 3 was the most popular EV in 2021 where 7 out of every 10 EVs delivered was a Model 3. Now a few of those sold are ending up on the used EV market – presumably as many Tesla owners upgrade to the new Model Y SUV – and new data has revealed another spike in used car online ad listings.
Today I look at what has caused this spike and where will the used Model 3s be trending next.
New data from carloop shows that used Tesla Model 3 listings continued to jump by another 18% in the last fortnight. Used EV listings for the Tesla Model 3 have reached their all-time highs in August.
This rise in used Tesla Model 3 listings started after the launch of the Tesla Model Y. Since its launch, the used Tesla Model 3 have risen by 244%.
Over the last couple of weeks, more and more Model 3 owners are listing their EVs on the used market ships with thousands of Tesla Model 3s and the highly anticipated Model Ys have finally made it to our shores.
Tesla Model Y deliveries began in some parts of Australia on Friday. Now news from Australia’s leading EV ship tracking expert, VedaPrime, states that the next ship with many more Tesla Model 3 and Model Y EVs on board has arrived at Port Kembla.
Additionally, he said in a tweet that production of the Model 3 has recommenced in Shanghai after a production line upgrade.
That is great news for hundreds of local Tesla order holders who are still awaiting Model 3 orders to be fulfilled. The Driven hears some customers whose orders go back as far as January for long-range Model 3s are yet to hear from Tesla with regard to a delivery date.
As we know, many existing owners of Tesla Model 3 also had orders for the more spacious Tesla Model Y. As newer Model Y EVs are being delivered, so is the rise in more used Tesla Model 3s coming onto the market.
We can expect this trend to continue for a couple more months as more shipments arrive. The prices being asked by many of these owners will also likely fall as newer Tesla Model 3s arrive on the market.
That would create a much healthier used EV market and encourage more people to make the switch to EVs.
