Australian mining giant BHP has ordered nearly a dozen battery electric loaders for use at its Jansen Potash Project in Canada.

Swedish mining technology company Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions announced this week that it had received an order for 11 battery electric vehicles from BHP for the Jansen Potash Project, expected to be the world’s largest.

BHP has ordered 10 underground battery electric loaders along with 1 electric tethered loader for delivery in 2023 through to 2025.

“Electric mining equipment is essential to meeting our goals to reduce emissions, improve productivity and most importantly protect the health of our employees underground,” said Simon Thomas, president of Potash at BHP.

“Jansen will have the lowest carbon emissions per tonne of product produced compared to any potash mine operating today in Saskatchewan.”

The Driven has reached out to BHP for clarification on exactly what models they have purchased from Sandvik – which boasts a significant portfolio of options. We will update as appropriate.
