First look back to electric future as DeLorean unveils Alpha5 EV

The DeLorean Motor Company has given us an extensive look at its reimagined electric version of the classic car that served as the technological centre point of the ‘Back to the Future’ movies – though we consider it unlikely this new EV model will have Doc Brown’s flux capacitor installed.

Boasting a top speed of 250km/h and acceleration from 0-100km/h of 2.99 seconds, the all new DeLorean Alpha5 is expected to deliver an estimated range of 480-kilometres thanks to its 110kWh battery.

A four-seater with a drag coefficient of 0.23Cd, the new DeLorean is nevertheless designed by the same storied design house founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro, Italdesign, that designed the original DeLorean.

It should be pretty unsurprising, therefore, to find the gullwing doors and rear window louvres on this new model, providing some very tactile links to the original.

The new DeLorean Motor Company – which was formed in 1995 and has officially acquired the DMC rights, tooling, engineering drawings, and company records from its previously defunct predecessor – has published dozens of photos and concept sketches of the new Alpha5 which can be viewed here, but we’ve picked out some of our favourites.

We expect to see more of the DeLorean Alpha5 later this year at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance set to be held in August.
