The EV market has seen rapid growth in the first quarter of 2022 in Queensland, with Tesla leading the way after buyers continued to take advantage of a price drop last year.
Newly released data from carloop shows that Queensland, like the WA Tesla market, saw its Tesla uptake increase rapidly and more than doubling in the first quarter of 2022. .
Queensland Tesla ownership saw an increase of 114% to 961 in the first quarter of 2022 when compared to the same time last year.
The Tesla Model 3 price drop in July 2021 carried over to nearly all new Tesla orders that were delivered in Queensland in 2022 in the first quarter.
That change in July made the model 3 SR+/RWD model fall under $60,000 excluding on-road costs.
However, that changed again in March 2022 with an increase of $4000 for the base RWD model. The impact of this recent price change on uptake in Queensland is still unknown.
In March 2022, the Queensland government also announced their new EV subsidy program. Unlike NSW & Victorian EV subsidy program on the East Coast, it didn’t include subsidies that would contribute to a greater EV ownership in Tesla uptake as the subsidy is capped to EVs under $58,000.
Despite this exclusion, the Tesla Model 3 uptake seems to be very strong in the Sunshine state as seen by the monthly Tesla ownership trends.
The previously mentioned price of Tesla Model 3 saw higher orders in Q4 of 2021 resulting in the significant increase in Queensland deliveries in Q1 2022. Breaking the 2022 numbers down further showed that 631 new Teslas arrived in Queensland during March 2022 alone.
EV charging infrastructure is getting better all across Australia and recent initiatives by the Queensland government in installing more charging stations as part of the Queensland EV superhighway are playing a role in the greater EV uptake.
This obviously also benefits Tesla owners as most of these rapid DC chargers offer the standardised CCS2 port in Australia.
Many of the new chargers are located in great locations where EV owners can charge their cars and help spread the word too.
Locations like the tennis club along the Brisbane river in Hamilton is a good way to showcase the benefits of EVs in the eyes of the general public and further increases EV awareness in times when EVs are getting harder to test-drive due to limited supply and high demand.
The demand for EVs has increased quite rapidly in Australia, especially with the recent high fuel prices many Australians have experienced at the petrol stations across the country.
This demand trend will continue as there is more EV advertising than ever by traditional auto brands which indirectly helps Tesla in Australia who is synonymous with making EVs more attractive to the masses.
carloop predicts over 1240 new Queensland Tesla owners in Q2, up from 961 in Q1 2022. This would be a 66% rise on the same time in 2021 where 746 new Teslas made it onto Queensland roads.
From what we can see on the EV uptake front, Tesla remains to be the premier EV brand in Queensland and will continue to do so across Australia in 2022.
