Tesla electric cars all sold out until 2023 in home market

Tesla deliveries of most models in the United States, and in particular the Model Y, appear to be sold out for the rest of 2022, even after recent price hikes.

According to a recent analysis of delivery times on Tesla’s US online configurator by Electrek, most Tesla models are sold out through the end of 2022 with a huge backlog of orders, especially for the Model Y.

This is despite the fact that Tesla recently increased prices across its portfolio in the US.

The base version of the Model Y, which currently sells for $63,000 after recent price increases, is now being delivered between January 2023 and April 2023.

However, if you are in America and want to get your hands on a Model Y faster, Tesla provides faster delivery on orders that choose more options – such as bigger wheels, the Performance Version, or when you add the Full Self-Driving (FSD) package. Even then, orders for any of these options still see delivery pushed out to the second half of 2022.

Electrek notes, though, that the cheapest way to get a Model Y faster is simply to order the Model Y Performance, which as it explains, winds up being just $3,000 more expensive than the Model Y Long Range with the 20″ wheels, after the recent price hikes.

Not all Tesla models are experiencing such huge order backlogs, though. The Model 3 is reporting delivery for new orders taking place between July and September 2022. And, as with the Model Y, you can get the Model 3 a month faster if you add the 19” wheels for a cost of $US1,500, or if you add buy the Model 3 Long Range, which reports delivery between June and August.

Conversely, the Model 3 Performance Version is reporting delivery dates between June and July of 2023.

According to Electrek, the quickest turnaround comes with ordering a base Model 3 and adding the FSD package, which can geta car delivered as soon as April – “Tesla really wants that $12,000 for the FSD.”

The Tesla Model S, which was out of production for half of 2021, meaning that Tesla is still trying to catch up on that backlog of orders, is reporting delivery dates between November 2022 and January 2023. Again, you can get that a little faster if you add options, but it doesn’t look likely new orders will see anything until the last quarter of the year.

Tesla’s Model X is in even worse shape, due to the fact it was out of production for longer than the Model S in 2021.

New orders of the base version of the Model X with a five-seat configuration won’t be delivered until the second quarter of 2023. Choosing the six- or seven-seat configuration will allow you to receive the Model X by the end of this year, whereas adding the FSD package won’t affect either the Model S or Model X like it does for the Model 3 and Model Y.

Finally, the Model X Plaid is reporting a delivery timeline of between August and October, but is only available in a six-seat configuration.

For Australians, our choice is greatly limited, with the only models available for order through Tesla’s online Australia configurator being the Model 3, Model S, and Model X. Both the Models S and X are available in a base model and Tesla’s unique ‘Plaid’ model, but for both vehicles only US specifications and images are provided.

Similarly, according to the configurator: “Pricing and options will be finalised as delivery approaches. You will be notified to complete your order when final pricing and options are published. Until then, your order will be considered a pre-order that you may cancel with a full refund.”

Only the Model 3 has an Australian-specific configurator outline and Australian specifications and delivery estimates, with the base model Rear-Wheel Drive Model 3 starting at $63,900. Two Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive are also available, with the Model 3 Long Range starting at $76,200 and the Model 3 Performance starting at $88,900.

For all three models, estimated delivery is set at “6-9 months”, which works out to around October 2022 to January 2023.
