The long-awaited 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric sedan is reportedly “on track” to launch in Australia later this year according to a spokesperson to the company who confirmed the news to The Driven.

The Ioniq 6, which is based on the carmaker’s Prophecy concept, hasn’t even been officially revealed in its production form – though we’ve caught glimpses of the car already – yet the four-door electric sedan has been confirmed for sale in Australia by year’s end.

A spokesperson for Hyundai Australia confirmed to The Driven that the “Ioniq 6 is on track to launch in Australia this year.”

While no date has been locked in, the arrival of the car that will feature cat-like headlights and a panoramic roof will likely be towards the end of the year.

The Ioniq 6 made an official first appearance back in September at the IAA motor show in Munich, but the car was believed to be still in its prototype phase and held many of the design elements from the Prophecy concept introduced by the company in late 2020, which won it a prestigious car design award.

Built on the same e-GMP platform as the Ioniq 5, the Ioniq 6 is expected to boast 400-volt and 800-volt architecture that will allow for ultra-fast 350kW charging and vehicle-to-load capability.

Since then, the Ioniq 6 – which is expected to launch first in Korea – has since been seen in camouflage form, maintaining many of the design elements of the Prophecy but with what appears to be a slightly less concept-only-design cabin that might actually allow humans to sit comfortably within.

The launch of the Ioniq 6 follows the already popular Ioniq 5, which is already on sale in Australia, and precedes the larger seven-seat Ioniq 7 which remains set for launch in 2024.
