Musk says Tesla will commence roll out of Full Self-Driving Beta in Canada

Tesla will expand its Full Self-Driving (FSD) program to Canada, Elon Musk said on Monday (Australia time).

Scheduled to occur in “two to four weeks,” according to Tesla boss Elon Musk, it is first time the self-driving beta software testing program will be conducted outside the US.

In response to a follower on Twitter, Musk said, “We will start rolling out FSD beta in Canada cautiously in next 2 to 4 weeks.”

Granted, as is often the case with “Elon Time”, this could mean a Canadian roll out takes anywhere up to a few months or even longer: a Canadian rollout of the FSD was first touted by the tech entrepreneur in late 2020, when Musk said the beta program would be extended there “very soon.”

Musk did not elaborate on whether Canadian drivers applying to the program would need to satisfy the 100/100 safety score system used by Tesla in the US.

The expansion of the program comes as Tesla makes plans to increase the price of the FSD package from $US10,000 to $12,000. In Australia, it currently costs $A10,100. It is not known if the price rise – which we understand will be implemented on Monday in the US (as of writing it is 5pm Sunday on the east coast) – will be applied to FSD in Australia just yet.

Tesla’s FSD beta program is currently under review by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

As the program requires drivers to be attentive at all time, Tesla was not required to apply under the state’s autonomous driving test rules, but the DMV says that it has concerns that some drivers are posting “videos showing a dangerous use of that technology.” In the past, Tesla said it had revoked access to the program for drivers who were “not paying sufficient attention.”
