German luxury automaker BMW can now claim five fully electric vehicles to its name, having this week begun deliveries to customers of its i4 all-electric sedan.
Production of the BMW i4 began at the company’s plant in Munich at the end of October and a month later the first deliveries were made at the BMW Welt museum and delivery location.
The BMW i4 Gran Coupé boasts a range of up to 590-kilometres (WLTP) for the single motor i4 eDrive40 model, and maximum output of up to 400kW for the dual motor i4 M50. It has a battery capacity of 83.9kWh and can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in around 4 seconds.
A single motor option will also be available, though with somewhat reduced output.
Aimed to take on the Tesla Model 3 and the Polestar 2, the BMW i4 is the Munich-based automaker’s first EV built specifically with driving dynamics in mind.
“It is a very special moment for us when we hand over brand new models to customers for the first time,” said Bernhard Kuhnt, senior vice president of BMW Group Market Germany.
“The BMW i4 shows in an emotional way how well fully-electric mobility and sporty driving dynamics fit together. For us, it is therefore clear: the BMW i4 will offer our customers a whole new dimension of driving pleasure.”
Ironically, deliveries of the i4 comes only a couple of weeks after it was reported that BMW had been lobbying against climate protection regulations and set itself up as the German automotive sector’s leading opponent of climate policy.
BMW’s i4 has nevertheless been well received and seen significant demand from customers.
“With the BMW i4, we have absolutely struck a chord,” said Bernhardt Kuhnt. “You can see this from the very high demand for this car.
