Genesis officially unveils GV60 luxury EV – and it’s “emotional”

Genesis has officially unveiled its first dedicated electric vehicle, the GV60, less than two weeks after a partially camouflaged specimen was snapped in the wild, charging at an NRMA charger in Australia.

The GV60 was formally premiered on Thursday in an online event showcasing the luxury EV’s various technologies as well as its “sleek and athletic coupé sports utility vehicle design” that Genesis says represents its “transition to the sustainable era.”

The GV60 is Genesis’ first vehicle to be built on the dedicated EV platform, known as Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which as The Driven has reported is the same all-electric platform as the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6.

The GV60 will be available in three models: a standard rear-wheel-drive model, a standard four-wheel-drive model, and a performance model with four-wheel-drive – each with a 77.4kWh battery and – for the standard RWD model – a maximum driving range of 451km per charge.

The standard RWD model’s motor features a maximum output of 168kW and a maximum torque of 350Nm. The standard AWD model has a 160kW motor for its rear wheels and a 74kW motor for its front wheels, providing a total output of 234kW, a maximum torque of 605Nm, and a maximum driving range of 400km per charge.

The performance model features two 160kW motors for the front and rear wheels, delivering a total output of 320kW, maximum torque of 605Nm, and a maximum driving range of 368km per charge – this option Genesis recommends for customers seeking “a fun driving experience.”

The GV60 also comes with a Boost Mode – a button that when pressed increases the performance of the vehicle’s maximum output for 10 seconds, allowing it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 4 seconds. There is also a Drift Mode that provides “athletic driving” by optimising driving power and braking.

On the outside, the GV60 features a clamshell hood, a single panel taking in both hood and fenders and sporting a new wing emblem. The design theme is “seamless and minimal” yet muscular, with a wide stance.

Genesis also revealed that the GV60 would be available in 11 colours, including four new ones: São Paulo Lime, Hanauma Mint, Atacama Copper, and Atacama Copper Matte. Other colours include Vik Black, Uyuni White, Matterhorn White, Saville Silver, Carbon Metal, Melbourne Gray, and Royal Blue.

The São Paulo Lime – pictured above – is Genesis’ new signature colour for the GV60 and is said to emphasise the EV’s “active and dynamic character.” The Atacama Copper, meanwhile, looks to be the colour of the GV60 spotted in Australia.

On the inside, Genesis says describes the design theme as the “beauty of white space,” with floating architecture – namely a floating console – and “unique details combining to create a unique look.”

On the floating console, a Crystal Sphere – which itself, apparently, looks like it is floating in mid-air (pictured below) – aims to create an emotional connection between the driver and the vehicle, including by providing “mood lights” when the vehicle is turned off.

When the EV is ready to drive, the sphere rotates and the Shift-By-Wire (SBW) appears, “creating an indoor atmosphere of futuristic mobility.”

Other features inlcude a slim cockpit and flat floor, a next-generation infotainment system, and seats, door armrests, console armrests, and crash pads made with plant-based leather. The seat covers and door center trims use fabrics sourced partly from recycled PET bottles and fishnets.

The interior will be available in five possible colours: Obsidian Black, Torrent Navy, Ash Gray/Glacier White, Monstera Green/Camel Beige and Monstera Green/Glassier White.

Another interesting feature offers the ability to use only biometric information to drive their car. That is, a “face connect” system that will recognise the driver’s face to lock or unlock its doors without a key (it can register two faces); and a fingerprint authentication system to start and drive the car without a key.

“The GV60 is the first dedicated EV model with the most dynamic design, representing Genesis’ electrification,” said Jay Chang, global head of Genesis brand.

“It will set a new standard for luxury electric vehicles with a powerful driving performance and various key features which are emotionally connected to customers.

“The GV60 will provide a differentiated experience that enables interaction with vehicles in Genesis’ own caring and considerate way,” said Luc Donckerwolke, chief brand officer of Genesis brand.

The GV60 will also feature electric Active Sound Design (e-ASD), which offers various virtual driving sounds through the speakers, based on the driving mode, the vehicle’s speed, and accelerator pedal data.

Choices include a ‘Futuristic’ sound that apparently symbolises the direction of future mobility; a soft and sporty ‘G-Engine’ sound that’s based on reggular ICE engine noises; and an ‘E-Motor’ sound, which “reimagines” the EV’s motor sounds.
