Electric Mustang claims Guinness records for charging speed, and fewest charging stops

The newest electric car from American automotive giant Ford, the Mustang Mach-E, became a triple Guinness World Records holder last week, adding records for shortest charging time and fewest charge stops to its existing record for lowest energy consumption.

The fully electric Mustang Mach-E obtained its first Guinness World Records title back in July after it obtained the award for the lowest energy consumption in an electric car in a drive between John O’Groats and Land’s End in Great Britain.

With 88kWh of available battery capacity, the Mach-E travelled over 6.5-miles/kWh (nearly 10kms/kWh) reflecting well over 500 miles (800kms) of range – which adds over 120-miles to the Mustang Mach-E’s official 379-range.

A journey between John O’Groats and Land’s End represents a traversal of the whole length of the island of Great Britain, from the northern-most point of Scotland to the southern tip of England. The 840-mile journey in July required only two main charging stops, the first at Wigan, in North West England, and the second at Cullompton, Devon.

Converting the official figures to kilometres, the Mach-E travelled over 10.46-kilometres/kWh along the 1,352-kilometre journey reflecting a total vehicle range of well over 800-kilometres.

“This record is about demonstrating that electric cars are now viable for everyone,” said world record team members Paul Clifton, BBC transport correspondent, and co-drivers Fergal McGrath and Kevin Booker, who already hold petrol and diesel economy records between them.

“Not just for short urban trips to work or the shops, or as a second car.  But for real-world use on long cross-country journeys.  We’ve proved that, with this car, the tipping-point has been reached.”

Ford collected two more Guinness World Records titles, which the company announced last week, in another journey between John O’Groats and Land’s End undertaken from 31 July to 1 August – this time for shortest charging time on the journey as well as fewest charge stops.

The new record for shortest charging time from John O’Groats to Land’s End in an electric vehicle is 43 min 13 sec, over 30 minutes quicker than the previous attempt. The extended range, rear wheel drive Mustang Mach-E made a single fast charging stop which, at 150kW, added approximately 73-miles (or 117-kilometres) of driving range every 10 minutes.

The team of Clifton, McGrath, and Booker, were joined by Adam Wood, and made their single charging stop at MFG’s charging hub in Wigan, in North West England.

“As deliveries ramp up, customers can be assured of Mach-E’s viability for daily use – as evidenced by this triple record-breaking performance, even on the UK’s most extreme journey,” said Tim Nicklin, Ford’s electrification manager.

“Ford’s own Go Electric report on consumer perceptions reveals that the average range which the public thinks an electric car can travel is under 150 miles. If the Mach-E can achieve well over three times that distance in the hands of professionals, and under 45 minutes of top-up charging on route, it can easily accommodate customers’ everyday requirements.”
