Tesla CEO and co-founder Elon Musk has given another update for when Tesla owners will be able to download the company’s semi-autonomous “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) beta software.
In comments on Twitter on Thursday morning (Australia time), Musk responded to a question about the release, which has been in testing with a limited number of drivers since October last year.
It was expected to be rolled out to Tesla owners who have paid for the FSD package in May, but as is often the case with Musk this proved to be overly optimistic.
“We should be there with Beta 10, which goes out a week from Friday (no point release this week),” said Musk.
“It will have a completely retrained NN (neural network), so will need another few weeks after that for tuning & bug fixes. Best guess is public beta button in ~4 weeks.
The new comments come in less than a week after Musk and the Tesla AI team revealed the processes and achievement, and future intentions for the company’s artificial intelligence and autonomous driving plans – including a humanoid robot.
Part of this has included rebuilding its object labelling system from the ground up, and creation of its own computer chip that can handle the massive amounts of data needed to train a “Dojo” neural network to make fully autonomous driving a reality.
Tesla owners who have paid for the FSD package that are keen try it out will just have to wait a little longer.
They’ll also have to be US residents as far as we understand. Although a wider roll out to countries such as Canada and Norway is expected, there is no indication they will be included in the v10 rollout.
