Volkswagen readies to unveil all-electric ID.5 coupé

Volkswagen has revealed an early study of the ID.5 GTX, its all electric coupe which will be formally unveiled for the first time at the upcoming international motor show IAA in Munich in September.

Following the release of the ID.3 electric hatch and the ID.4 electric SUV, the ID.5 (due in 2022) is an SUV crossover-style coupé built on VW’s modular electric drive platform known as MEB.

It has an attractive, coupé-like styling, and the sporty look is backed up by high-performance. It is an all-wheel drive EV with two electric motors with maximum 220kW power, and a 77kWh (usable capacity) battery that is said to deliver 497km driving range (WLTP).

As with the other vehicles in the ID series, the 4.60m long ID.5 GTX is fully connected and will receive updates over-the-air. With VW’s new joint venture neocx now a done deal, the software problems that delayed the ID.3’s launch in 2020 are hopefully a thing of the past.

The ID.5 GTX will charge at a top rate of 125 kW which adds 200km driving range in 20 minutes as long as the battery is pre-conditioned.

The ID.5 promises to be at heart a tourer with balanced driving characteristics – sporty, but not too tightly tuned.

Whether, and when, it will make it to Australia is as yet unclear. However, with recent movements in state EV policies applauded by Volkswagen Australia sooner is looking more likely than later.
