Foxconn, the world’s largest electronics manufacturer, and Taiwanese electric scooter and battery swapping developer Gogoro, have announced a partnership designed to accelerate Gogoro’s global expansion of its battery swapping system and Smartscooters.
Founded in 2011, Gogoro has designed both a battery swapping platform and its own Smartscooter, which work together as part of the company’s larger ethos of rethinking urban energy and mobility.
A leader in the overlapping fields of compact electric propulsion, smart battery design, battery swapping, and advanced cloud services, Gogoro has drawn significant attention.
With a range of Smartscooters available, including the stylish Gogoro Viva and Viva Mix, Gogoro’s current market focus is on Taiwan. The company currently boasts nearly 400,000 Smartscooter riders and 2,100 battery swapping stations, supporting 270,000 daily battery swaps with nearly 200 million total battery swaps to date.
But moves are being made to expand the company’s product reach, after Gogoro revealed on Wednesday that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Foxconn.
The Taiwanese electronics manufacturing giant has supplied some of the tech industry’s biggest and most popular products, including the Apple iPhone, Amazon Kindle, as well as gaming consoles for Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox.
In Gogoro’s case, the MoU forms a strategic technology and manufacturing partnership which is designed to accelerate the company’s global expansion by tapping Foxconn’s massive manufacturing capabilities to introduce new levels of production and scale for both the battery swapping technologies and the Smartscooters.
The two companies will immediately begin collaborating on multiple projects including smart batteries, vehicle engineering, and manufacturing, the said.
“As the world embraces smart electric transportation in new ways, a key challenge is how to introduce these new innovative options to people in every corner of the world,” said Young Liu, Chairman of Foxconn. “The Foxconn -Gogoro partnership was established to meet this demand.
“This partnership brings together Gogoro’s global leadership in urban battery swapping and smart vehicle technologies with Foxconn’s extensive global manufacturing capabilities to enable mass distribution of Gogoro’s smart battery swapping ecosystem and vehicles.”
“As the Gogoro ecosystem continues establishing itself as the industry leader in battery swapping and urban refueling, our ability to rapidly scale our manufacturing to meet global demands is vital,” said Horace Luke, founder and CEO, Gogoro Inc.
“Foxconn’s global manufacturing leadership, focus on new innovative technologies and commitment to sustainable electric transportation made it the perfect fit for Gogoro. Together, our companies will be on the forefront of rolling out smart mobility solutions in cities around the world.”
Hopefully, then, we might soon be seeing more of Gogoro’s Smartscooters and smart battery swapping technologies outside of Taiwan.
