The all-electric Volvo XC40 Recharge will be priced at $76,990 before on-road costs, the Swedish-Chinese carmaker revealed on Tuesday.
It is the first all-electric vehicle to be released in Australia under the Volvo name, and precedes the Polestar 2 which is made by Volvo’s offshoot Polestar brand.
The XC40 Recharge will be available in just one specification, the carmaker said in a release on Tuesday, offering a projected 418km driving range from its 78kWh battery, and a slew of characteristic Volvo safety features.
Dual 150kW motors mean the all-electric SUV will deliver a more than zippy power output of 300kW while 660Nm torque means acceleration from a standing start to 100km/hr can be done in 4.9 seconds.
Fast charging the vehicle at a DC station, the XC40 Recharge can go from empty to 80% in 40 minutes, and while Volvo Australia has not specified the AC “slow charge” rate, overseas specifications indicate a maximum rate of 3.7kW.
The XC40 Recharge will no doubt be a welcome addition to the limited Australian market when it is launched in the third quarter of 2021.
Its pricing means it will compete directly with the upcoming Mercedes EQA, which will be priced from $76,800. However its specifications are well above the EQA’s 140kW and 375Nm so those after more power may well decide to go for the Volvo.
Volvo is offering a three-year 100,000-kilometre service wear and tear plan with the XC40 Recharge which includes wiper blades, brake pads and brake discs. It will also come with eight-year roadside assistance and an eight-year battery warranty.
