Israeli-based solar inverter manufacturer SolarEdge has announced that its new e-Mobility division will supply full electrical powertrain units and batteries for the E-Ducato, the new light commercial vehicle being produced by Italian automaker Fiat.
SolarEdge has been a long-time leader in the solar industry, having been established in 2006 and since that time shipped over 21GW worth of DC optimised inverter solution around the globe.
In late-2019 the company announced the beginning of a shift towards electric vehicles as it unveiled its EV charging single phase inverter that combined an EV charger and solar inverter which the company claimed could change electric vehicles up to four times faster than a standard Level 1 charger.
The company has since expanded into providing a range of electric vehicle products including battery packs and motors for electric light commercial vehicles, electric buses, and electric motorcycles.
SolarEdge’s e-Mobility division was formed in January 2019 with the acquisition of SMRE Spa, an Italian company built around e-mobility, automated production machines, and telematic software.
On Tuesday, SolarEdge announced that it had been selected by Italian automaker Fiat to provide full electrical powertrain units and batteries for the company’s production of the E-Ducato light commercial vehicle.
“We are excited to be a part of this significant moment for Stellantis [Fiat’s parent company] as they introduce an electric version of the very popular Fiat E-Ducato light commercial vehicle to the European market,” said Zivi Lando, SolarEdge Chief Executive Officer.
“In combining our full electrical powertrains with Stellantis’ expertise, we are able to offer the market a best-in-class LCV e-mobility solution that responds to the needs of commercial customers and helps meet city centres’ carbon neutral goals.
Technical specifics were not provided by SolarEdge, though based on their website’s information it could be assumed that the battery units being provided for the E-Ducato will be the company’s Battery Pack HV-400.
Fiat’s E-Ducato is a full electric battery electric vehicle (BEV) that has been in development for over four years, which was presented as a prototype in mid-2019.
The E-Ducato will be available in three chassis models and several battery options with a range from between 200-kilometres to over 330-kilometres.
Delivering maximum output of 90kW and maximum torque of 280Nm, the E-Ducato will boast load volume from 10-metres3 to 17-metres3 and what Fiat claims will be the best playload on the market, up to 1,950-kilograms.
