ABB to supply vehicle-to-grid charging tech to European projects

Swiss-Swedish technology multinational ABB announced this week that it will supply its new 11kW bi-directional vehicle-to-grid (V2G) EV charging technology to projects in France, the UK, Italy, Belgium, and Germany.

ABB announced on Tuesday that it has received a contract from France’s smart charging company DREEV, a joint venture launched in May of 2019 by French energy giant EDF and Californian start-up NUVVE.

Under the new partnership, ABB will supply its new 11kW bi-directional charging technology, specially designed for Vehicle-To-Grid EV (V2G) use, for charging kiosks starting in France, followed by kiosks in the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, and Germany.

ABB claims its 11kW V2G charging kiosks, which will be integrated with DREEV software technology, will enable EV owners to export surplus power back into the grid, with the potential of generating up to €20 per EV per month. This will help to defray the cost to consumers of purchasing and running an EV, while providing important grid services.

Compatible with current and future EV models, ABB claims that it’s 11kW bi-directional chargers meet “the most stringent grid compliance requirements and is designed to be the global benchmark for V2G charging.”

“The development of this intelligent bi-directional charging solution will be key in enabling the next step in the evolution of our e-mobility ecosystem and represents a key milestone in ABB’s sustainability strategy,” Frank Muehlon, head of ABB’s global business for e-mobility infrastructure solutions, said.
