Is Tesla about to drop price of Model Y before first deliveries?

A Tesla Model Y reservation holder has reported a change in price on their vehicle’s order page, prompting the question – is the price for the Model Y in the US about to drop?

According to Reddit user u/Coby_Cruz, the purchase price for their Long Range AWD Model Y was originally $US61,000 ($91,740 converted) – including premium 20″ wheels, white interior, and full self-driving capability (FSD).

But now, according to Cruz’s order page, it is just $US58,500 ($87,982 converted) – $US2,500 ($3,759) less than the week before.

“The price was at $61K just about a week ago. Haven’t seen anyone talk about this yet. Also, when I go to configure a new one when signed out, the price for all the same options is $62K. Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this?” asked Cruz on social forum Reddit.

As Cruz points out, the full price for this configuration on Tesla’s US website is $US62,000 – well, $US62,990 to be exact.

Other reservation holders say that the price has not changed in their order pages, with the exception of one who said that the price of their Performance Model Y with FSD has also dropped, from $US69,000 to $US66,500.

“Interesting. My P/FSD is 66500$ and shows the performance pack included. It used to be 69k if I recall correctly, but might be showing the 2500$ deposit somewhere and I’m not seeing it,” said u/ssg_actual.

This user notes that rebuilding in the configurator also gives a different price – but less than the original price.

“If I build it new it’s 67500$ but adding/removing performance pack doesn’t change price. Something is weird.”

Our best guess is Tesla is playing with some code within the website, and these prices may be a glitch.

It would certainly be great to see a drop however in Model Y pricing – as noted by The Driven when it comes to Australia it will already be priced well out of the budget of most drivers.

This has also been acknowledged by Elon Musk, who admitted on social media forum Twitter last Thursday that the price of the Model 3 in Australia also “seems high”.

One thing is certain – it is now cheaper than ever to reserve a Model Y, in the US at least as noted by Twitter use Rick Scinta with the reservation price falling to just $US100 ($A150 converted).
