VW ID Crozz electric SUV prototype spotted in the wild

A camouflaged prototype of VW’s planned all-electric SUV, the ID Crozz, has been spotted out driving about by spies in Southern Europe.

First introduced as a concept in 2017, the ID Crozz will be one of the first all-electric vehicles to be produced by the German carmaker under its ID series.

Volkswagen has previously announced that it wil be commencing sales of the 4WD electric SUV in 2020, so while its not that surprising to see it being tested in real world road conditions, it is a bit exciting!

What is also interesting is how it differs from its original concept – as you can by comparing Carscoop’s images to the image of the concept unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show below, the roof-line appears to have a steeper slope than its concept version, and a honeycomb “grille” instead of the original sweeping curves.

Additionally, it has a standard door handle and side mirrors unlike its concept version, which featured sliding doors and a sleek, inset mirror.

It does appear to have retained the panoramic glass roof, albeit with a sill at the top back which sadly breaks up the sexy roof-line of its concept model.

Like its stablemate, the all-electric ID3 hatchback, the ID Crozz will be built on VW’s modular MEB electric drivetrain platform, which it has developed to use across a whole range of electric vehicles including from sister brands Uadi, Seat, and Škoda.

When finally made available on the market, VW says that drivers can expect a range of 500km (although this is on the usually optimistic NEDC rating), a top speed of 180km/hr, and a power output of 225kW.

In 2021, it will be joined by VW’s sixth electric model in the ID range, another SUV that the carmaker has dubbed the ID Roomzz.
