The 2019 Nissan Leaf

The original Nissan Leaf was one of the first electric vehicles on the Australian market, first launching here all the way back in 2012. Several iterations have been made over the years to improve driving range and practicality. The last addition was the Leaf e+ which featured a larger 62 kWh battery pack.

If you are looking at purchasing a second-hand Nissan Leaf, be aware that Leaf battery packs do not have any active cooling and have been known to suffer from increased degradation and also thermally throttle when DC fast charged back to back. Nissan Leaf is also fitted with the obsolete CHAdeMO DC fast charging plug which is less commonly fitted to public charging stations.

The first generation ZE0 Nissan Leaf deserves a special mention in this section as they are readily available on the second hand market with some occasionally listed below $10,000. 2012 Leaf models first launched here with 24 kWh batteries, which grew to 30 kWh by 2017 when the first generation ended.

Nissan Australia stopped selling the Leaf through dealerships between 2013 and 2017, so cars of this age are either private imports or were purchased through specialist bulk-buy schemes such as The Good Car Company. If considering a Leaf built between 2013 and 2017, make sure to investigate the battery health as well as warranty and repair situation before purchasing.
