It seems the onslaught of new full-electric light commercial vehicles isn’t going to end any time soon. Hyundai have just announced an all-electric (BEV) version of their popular Staria 1t van.
Launching at $70,990 plus on-roads, the new full-electric version has a 450 km WLTP driving range, 4.9 cubic metre cargo capacity/1,005kg payload and 2 tonne (braked trailer) tow capacity. Power comes from a 160kW, 350Nm electric motor driving the front wheels.
Based on the 800V E-GMP platform (which also underpins many Hyundai, Kia and Genesis models) charging is 11kW AC and around 230kW DC, with Hyundai quoting a 10% to 80% DC charge time of 20 min for its 84 kWh battery.
Added electric specific features include an interior vehicle to load (V2L) outlet providing 240V AC power at 15A (3600W), 12.3-inch multimedia and instrument cluster displays, Shift-by-Wire drive selection, Lane Following Assist 2, a battery heating system and a reverse cycle heat pump for the heating/cooling system. Also specific to the BEV version is a 23.9-litre front boot (froot).

Whilst the Staria BEV is significantly more expensive than competitors such as the Kia PV5 ($56k+ORCs) and the soon to arrive Ford E-Transit City ($50k on the road), it does have a better driving range and DC charging rate than both, especially the Ford E-Transit City (which has a 254 km range and only 87kW DC charge rate).
For those in need of a longer range and/or rapid recharging on the road – the new Staria BEV does hold advantages over the others currently on the market – including by the way the inclusion of a full-size spare wheel.
However, unlike some other 1t vans, seating is strictly for two in all versions – which may/may not be a consideration for some businesses.
The Staria Load Electric also features Hyundai’s latest Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC), enabling both satellite navigation and Over-The-Air updates.
Servicing is 30,000km/24 months at around $650 per service.
