MG, now owned by Chinese automaker SAIC, has revealed that Australia has been chosen to be the first market in the world to launch the company’s new MGU9 electric ute.
Key features and specifications for the MGU9, one of the first all-electric utes to reach Australia, were unveiled on Tuesday, although the key price details and the delivery timetable were not revealed.
The MGU9 has supposedly been designed as a “lifestyle ute” – which seems to refer to its combination of “everyday practicality with the capability for weekends away”, which of course is a delicious irony considering the previous Coalition government’s warnings that EVs “won’t tow your” boat would “ruin the weekend” for Australian drivers.
And just to emphasis this fact, the MGU9 boasts a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, and will be capable of carrying everything from bikes and camping gear to towing a caravan, trailer, or indeed a boat.
And whether you’re on the job site or camp site, the 6.6 kW vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability also allows owners to power their tools or camping equipment from either the external CCS2 outlet or three additional 2.2 kW outlets inside the cabin.
The MGU9 electric ute will join a small but growing number of electric ute options in Australia, which notably includes the newly released Toyota Hilux BEV, although that model has a limited range and is designed mostly for mines, farmers and companies with a “back-to-base” fleet.

The MGU9 will deliver a WLTP range of around 430 km (not towing), powered by a 102.2 kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the MGU9 can produce 325 kilowatts (kW) of power and 700 Nm of torque from dual electric motors.
Charging options include 115 kW DC charging capable of charging from 20 to 80 per cent in approximately 42 minutes, along with 11 kW AC charging.
All-wheel drive and full-function four-wheel electronic air suspension are paired with an acceleration from 0-100km/h of 5.8 seconds. The MGU9 EV also offers a 236-litre frunk and a rear tray/tub that can accommodate a standard pallet.
Up front, dual 12.3-inch screens feature wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with 15W wireless charging, leather seats, and an eight-speaker JBL sound system. The driver’s seat boasts heating, ventilation, and massage functionality, while the steering wheel and front passenger seat are also heated.

The vehicle also features a hands-free automatic tailgate, 360-degree camera system, and five-star ANCAP safety rating.
“The MGU9 EV brings together the capability and utility people expect from a ute with the comfort and benefits of an electric powertrain,” said Dimitri Andreatidis, marketing director at MG Motor Australia in a statement.
“It’s designed to be used every day, whether that’s for work during the week, the school run or getting away on the weekend. Being the first market globally to launch the MGU9 EV is also a significant milestone for MG and reflects the importance of Australia to our business.”
