German car giant Volkswagen has unveiled its ID.X Performance show car, an all-wheel-drive vision of an all-electric sports limousine boasting dual-motor drive with 411kW of power.
Volkswagen unveiled the ID.X Performance at the ID. Treffen meet-up in Locarno, located on the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore on the south side of the Alps. The fan-organised meet-up was held last week and was initiated and organised by ID. customers.
The latest electric show car from Volkswagen – following the ID. Xtreme and ID. Xcite shown last year – is more of an illustration of potential future electric models and is not guaranteed to ever be brought to production.

Nevertheless, the ID.X Performance is built on Volkswagen’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform and boasts dual-motor drive with 411kW of power (558PS).
The permanently excited synchronous motor on the rear axle is paired with an additional asynchronous motor on the front axle to create an all-wheel drive, which Volkswagen claims allows for “a short-time overload capability and particularly low drag losses.”
As a result, the ID.X Performance offers a boost function to deliver short-term bursts of power.
Volkswagen didn’t confirm any specific battery size but did say that it was capable of delivering high continuous power output and short charging times with a charging capacity of up to 200kW.
As with all such “show cars”, the majority of Volkswagen’s focus was on the exterior and interior design elements which “demonstrates its unique athleticism through its dynamic appearance.”
Both the front splitter and rear diffuser are made of carbon, and Volkswagen’s engineers have increased the toe by 80 millimetres and lowered the sports suspension with “especially stiff springs” by 60 millimetres.
20-inch sports alloy wheels with a central lock and size 265 racing tyres are combined with tinted taillight clusters and a rear carbon wing delivering the necessary downforce. Inside, carbon bucket seats continue the sporty themes and red accents liven up the otherwise grey-scale interior.
