Chinese automotive giant Chery Group outlined plans last month to launch multiple new EV models in Australia after its Omoda Jaecoo sub-brand sold over 10,000 units of its J5 electric SUV to date.
The brand has now unveiled a new, futuristic-looking SUV model it calls the X, destined for international markets, though it has yet to confirm availability in Australia.
The model was previewed at an event we attended in Wuhu, China, and it sit under the Omoda Jaecoo sub-brand and will target a younger generation of EV buyers.
It will be bigger than the companyās popular Omoda Jaecoo J5 EV, coming in at 4.65 metres in length and a height of 1.72 metres. It will also feature a more adventurous design, 19-inch wheels, rugged all-terrain tyres, 200 mm of ground clearance and a wading depth of over 700 mm.
Towing specs have also been shared, coming in with 1.8 tonnes of towing and a roof load rating of 75 kg.
On the inside, the model is geared for families, offering 39 storage spaces, which the company says is ideal for equipment for outdoor activities or road trips. The design language is consistent with what its calls the āMecha Command Cockpitā and forms part of the floating centre console.
There is a 10.25-inch driver instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch central touchscreen with physical controls for frequently used functions such as air conditioning and driving modes.
The Omoda X will be offered in full electric powertrains as well as a plug-in hybrid system, and will be offered in two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations.
One other bit of tech incorporated in this model is an infrared thermal imaging night vision system, which helps identify potential hazards up to 90 meters away.
We would be keen to learn more about this and see how it performs at night, especially in avoiding kangaroos and other wildlife on Australian roads.
Roy Munoz, Chief Commercial Officer, Omoda Jaecoo Australia said: “Itās exciting to see the innovative products coming from our global headquarters, and the reveal of the Omoda X marks another significant step forward for the brand”.
“Combining a futuristic, rugged design with groundbreaking technology, including a thermal imaging camera, the Omoda X demonstrates our commitment to challenging conventions and pushing the boundaries of what customers can expect from a modern vehicle”.
However, the Omoda X is not yet confirmed for Australia, with further details to be revealed later, but given the success of the J5 EV, we look forward to keeping an eye out for any details around its local arrival in 2027.
