Smart reveals micro EV with 290 km of range

Smart, a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and China’s Geely Holdings, in 2024 launched two EVs in the Australian market, which were a lot bigger than the small city car the brand was once known for.

Then in August this year, the brand was finally spotted bringing back a small electric car, a 2.75-metre, 2-seater EV, with around 300 km of range and a new name of #2.

The brand has now officially unveiled the model at the Paris Motor Show, showcasing new details of the upcoming model, which will come with a 35.7 kWh battery pack, delivering 290 km on the WLTP cycle.

Priced from €20,000, the upcoming #2 will be powered by a rear-mounted 60 kW motor that will power this two-door city car. This motor is developed by Infimotion, the same company that supplies the drivetrain in the very popular Geely EX5 model in Australia.

Charging the small battery will take around 3 hours, thanks to the 11 kW on-board three-phase AC charger.

This model is built on an all-new electric compact architecture and could be the start of more city-friendly EVs to come from the Geely-backed brand.

On the inside, there is a 10-inch centre screen along with a driver info screen behind the steering wheel. It also has a glass roof that is available on the Premium models and the same variant also comes with a 7-speaker sound system.

Previously, the #2 has been approved for sale in China and is expected to start deliveries in Q4.

The regulatory approval for sale revealed the expected weight of the new light city hatch, coming in at 1,130 kg.

The smallest model from Smart will also pack 15 and 16-inch wheel options as well as two-toned paints.

In August 2026, the brand surprised many by getting a mural of the #2 painted in Melbourne, hinting at the car’s potential arrival into our market.

Given the unveiling in Paris, Smart is going back to its roots with the iconic Smart City Coupe, which started production in 1998, followed by the success of the Smart Fortwo city car.

With more details expected to arrive in the coming months, we’d be curious to see if it makes it into markets like ours after the #5 SUV which is the next model to land locally.
