Tesla deploys first pre-fabricated 1.2 MW electric truck charging station

Tesla opened its first Semi Megacharger station in July, providing up to 1.2 MW of charging power per stall, as its electric truck products enter high-volume commercial production.

Tesla says it has now deployed its first pre-assembled Megacharger site, showcasing faster deployments of truck charging stations, as deliveries of the Tesla Semi increase, and electric truck adoption in general increases as diesel prices soar.

In a post on X, Tesla’s Charging team said: ā€œWe’re ready to support the Semi ramp. First pre-assembled Megachargers deployed. Each unit is a V4 cabinet with 2 posts, up to 1.2 MW per post.ā€

One observer highlighted how this method of deployment will accelerate truck charging infrastructure: ā€œThey built the charger at the factory and dropped it on site. That’s how the Semi ramp actually happens,ā€ the noted.

Another commenter encouraged the Tesla Semi charging team to look into a network in Australia by saying: ā€œWe’re ready for you to build a network for the Semi linking coast to coast in Australia.ā€

The Tesla Semi comes in two variants. The first is a Standard Range with a 548 kWh battery pack that delivers over 500 km of range, and a larger Long Range variant with an 822 kWh battery that delivers up to over 800 km of range with a 37-tonne load on board.

Both variants use Tesla’s 4680 cells with NMCA chemistry, which can be charged at up to 1.2 MW with Tesla’s Megachargers, designed specifically for the Tesla Semi.

Tesla is expected to produce these at the company’s recently opened Nevada Gigafactory. It can produce up to 50,000 semi-trucks per year.

Previously, Tesla has been known to use pre-fabricated units to deploy charging quickly across the world.Ā The most recent version of these includes new folding pre-fab Supercharger units, designed with the aim of speeding up the rollout of reliable charging sites across the globe.

Even international deployments of these started in June, with the first batch of these units making it to Europe and being commissioned at a site in Norway.

The foldable method will help deliver better charging sites, both faster and cheaper, while also making it easier for the installation contractors, helping them deliver more sites faster.
