Chinese automotive giant Chery plans to launch multiple new EV models in Australia following the success of its Omoda Jaecoo sub brand with the J5 electric SUV, which has sold over 9,000 units to date.
The J5, driven by an aggressive price of under $37,000 driveaway, is the fourth best selling EV in Australia’s new car market this year, and Chery intends to cash in on that popularity with the release of two new electric SUVs, the Omoda 4 and the Omoda 7.
The Omoda 4, a smaller SUV in a growingly competitive Australian market segment, and the larger Omoda 7 will arrive in Australia in 2027. The Omoda 4 specifically is aimed at a “younger generation of Australian buyers”.

“Australian customers are looking for vehicles that combine distinctive design, advanced technology, strong value and electrified powertrain options, and these two models will allow us to offer even greater choice across some of the most important segments of the market,” said Roy Munoz, Chief Commercial Officer of Omoda Jaecoo Australia.
The Jaecoo J5 launch was well timed as it came just a few months before fuel price spikes, a key driver of the recent surge in EV cars and the leap in sales, along with an aggressive $36,990 driveaway launch price.
This model comes with a front-mounted 155 kW motor that produces 288 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds, which is quite good for an electric mid-size SUV.
The J5 claims up to 402 km of WLTP range, powered by a 58.9 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, which also offers vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability.
On the warranty front, it comes with a quite long 8-year unlimited-kilometre warranty, 8 years of capped-price servicing, and an 8-year, unlimited-kilometre battery pack warranty.
Earlier this year, we tested the J5 EV in Melbourne, and it is easy to see why it was a great, well-rounded package for what it delivers at under $37,000. If the Omoda 4 and Omoda 7 follow a similar philosophy, they would also climb the sales ranks quickly in the second half of 2027.
