Chery has been one of Australia’s fastest-growing brands and, over the last 18 months, has launched Omoda Jaecoo as a sub-brand geared toward younger, “adventure-focused” families as well as more recent announcement of the iCaur, an adventure-ready brand with boxy SUVs.
In June, the automotive giant also confirmed it will launch the Lepas sub-brand in Australia, with its first BEV model, the L6, heading towards our market.
This model has now been approved for sale in the ROVER register, hinting at its imminent Australian launch, and with a single front-wheel-drive variant.
The L6 will be powered by a front-mounted electric motor producing up to 160 kW. In other markets, this motor produces 275 Nm.
Other details shared include the vehicle’s length, which comes in at 4.57 metres, putting it close to the size of the Geely EX5 length.
The tow rating of the 1.86 tonne SUV has also been shared and is rated to 750 kg with a braked trailer. It also has a running clearance of 210 mm, making it quite easy to enter and exit.
After driving the Lepas L6 on a closed track in China earlier this year, and it clearly has more of a sporty feel compared to other models we’ve tested, probably because it rides on the LEX platform, which allows the brand to incorporate the latest BEV architecture and handling into these cars.
Although local technical specifications are yet to be confirmed, the L6 specs in other markets show a 67.1 kWh battery pack in the full BEV version., which deliver a range of around 450 km.
The L6 includes premium materials for comfort, while offering space that family car buyers are looking for. Other key features in other markets include a panoramic glass roof and a spacious cabin designed to improve the overall driver and passenger experience.
Given the success of the Omoda Jaecoo J5 EV, which is another affordable Chery sub-brand, we’d be keeping an eye out for the L6 and future Lepas models, as they could also see good traction with sales once they debut.
Full Australian-market specs, pricing and launch timing for the Lepas L6 will be announced closer to the vehicle’s local arrival in Q4 2026.
