Xpeng tech-heavy L03 electric SUV spotted in Australia ahead of release

Xpeng, a tech-driven electric car maker, has been testing its new electric SUV, the L03, in Australia ahead of the planned release later this year.

The L03 in camoflauge wrap was spotted by Jeff C, and the images reshared on X by Roland from ZappedAu. The car was seen in Pyrmont, Sydney, and is likely a testing vehicle ahead of the model’s launch.

A few weeks ago, the company announced its Chinese price, starting at the equivalent of $A30,500. This suggests an Australian price of less than $45,000.

In the coming days, the official global launch of L03 is also going to be taking place in Munich, with an announcement around its potential Australian arrival to follow shortly after that.

For the L03, there’s also a version with Xpeng’s VLA for supervised self-driving, rivalling Tesla’s FSD supervised.

It will be offered even on the base model with a single Xpeng-developed Turing AI chip, offering 750 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) in the Chinese market. That’s likely to be on offer in international markets too.

At an event in Beijing last month, at the invitation of Xpeng, we had the opportunity to view the LO3 and we were quite impressed with what the tech-driven brand has packaged up for its local and international growth, including here in Australia.

The L03 is just over 4.6 metres and has great aerodynamics, with an expected coefficient of drag of just 0.228. It also has physical door handles, which make it much easier to open and close, while also meeting the upcoming requirements for manual door handles in its local Chinese market.

The interior is quite minimalist, with a large high-definition screen in the centre, as in most new EVs, and a heads-up display. Wireless chargers are standard, and there is plenty of storage space at the front.

The LO3 will feature two Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries with capacities of 56 and 69 kWh. These will deliver a range of 505 and 650 km on the CLTC cycle, respectively, and are likely to be between 400 and 530 km on the WLTP cycle. It’s also powered by a 183 kW single motor, which is above many of its affordable rivals in the segment.
