Hundreds of barbeque enthusiasts recently gathered at Zestiny Farm on the Central Coast, New South Wales, to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest barbecue lesson, with the added twist that every BBQ was electric and powered by electric vehicles (EVs) from BYD.
Organised by Alex “Big Al” Horton and under the tuition of chef Jamie Gannon, The Big BBQ was held on Sunday June 7 and included 359 participants, breaking the previous record set in Kansas City, US, back in 2017 with 336 participants.
The attempt followed months of preparation as Horton and the Big BBQ team hosted BBQs across NSW to connect with fans and recruit cooks to participate in the world record bid.
In addition to securing the Guinness World Record, as adjudged by an official adjudicator who was on hand to officiate the count and award the honour, the event also helped raise money to tackle food insecurity, with funds raised going to support food relief charity OzHarvest.
Impressively, every BBQ at the event was an electric model and powered by Chinese EV giant BYD’s vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology.
Next on the cards for Horton and The Big BBQ team is a plan to host the world’s largest barbeque in terms of attendance.
“The record is held by Mexico with a barbie for 45,252 people,” said Horton. “We’re aiming to smash this record and hold a barbecue for 50,000 people. It’s a title that should be held by the Aussies.”
