Tesla has announced that the first vehicle-to-load (V2L) adapters are now available for sale in Australia, for use on the newly released Model Y L six-seater variantĀ

The availability of V2L was first announced by Tesla late last year. It has been one of the very few electric car makers not to provide V2L in its EVs, with many offering both interior and exterior plugs.

The Tesla adapter will be available for $145 and is currently marked as ā€œcoming soonā€ on the company’s online store.

ā€œTesla Outlet Adapter coming soon to Tesla Shop for Model Y L. Power other devices & appliances including space heaters, e-bikes & power tools,ā€ it posted on X.

The adapter will be rated 230 Volts and 15 Amps, with a maximum power of up to 3.5 kW.

Tesla notes that this is the only adapter that will be covered by the company’s car warranty, with a note on the online store saying: ā€œThis adapter is currently only available with Model Y L vehicles. Your vehicle warranty does not cover damage caused by 3rd party bi-directional vehicle adaptors or chargers.ā€

Previously, the addition of V2L was spotted in the 2025.32.300 software update for Model Y L with a new feature being added called the ā€œExternal discharge functionā€.Ā

This was then described as ā€œThe vehicle supports external discharge mode using the official adapter (to be released later).ā€

The addition of V2L capability will be welcomed by many as it would allow many owners of the car to power electrical equipment using the car’s battery when not in use.

Up until now, the Model 3 and Model Y, which consistently rank among the top 10 EV models by sales, have been missing this feature, so it’s good to see Tesla finally release it for certain versions of the Model Y.

V2L has been available in many EVs in the Australian market from various Chinese & Korean brands, including BYD, Geely, MG, Hyundai, Kia and others.

We look forward to sharing more updates on this as they become available in the coming months and trying it out ourselves.
