BYD slashes drive-away prices on its best-selling EV in Australia

Chinese car giant BYD has been in a rapid growth phase in Australia this year, with its top EV-selling model, Sealion 7, leading the charts, accounting for over 13,400 sales in 2025 and at times challenging the Tesla Model Y for top place on the sales podium.

The company – which has displaced Tesla as the biggest seller of EVs in the world – has now announced new driveaway pricing for its Sealion 7 Premium model, bringing it down to $54,990 for a limited time.Ā

This pricing will include all the government fees, which in states like Victoria could save new owners over $3,700 off the standard driveaway price of the car.

The government fees included in the offer are:

  • 12 months registration
  • Compulsory third party (CTP) insurance
  • Stamp duty
  • Dealer delivery charges.

In Victoria, these fees can add up to over $3,700, effectively taking that value off the price of the car. Without those charges, a Sealion 7 Premium would be priced from $58,750 driveaway in the state.Ā Ā

This offer is valid for buyers who purchase the vehicle by 31 March 2026 and take delivery by 19 April 2026.

In February 2025, BYD launched the Sealion 7 SUV, which quickly climbed the sales charts into the top two best-selling EVs in the country for the year.

The BYD Sealion 7 comes in two variants, Premium and Performance, with prices starting at $54,990 for the entry-level model. The top-spec performance variant bumps up to $63,990 before on-road costs.

The entry-level Sealion 7 Premium is powered by a single 230 kW rear-mounted motor, which delivers a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 6.7 seconds.

Both Sealion 7 variants are equipped with an 82.56 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) BYD blade battery pack, which can be charged at speeds up to 150 kW when DC charging.

They also have an on-board 11 kW AC charger for three-phase charging which is a welcome upgrade over previous models that only had 7 kW single-phase charging.Ā

This battery pack offers a range of 482 km on the Premium model, and a future version could offer a more affordable variant, with a smaller battery as seen in the ADR approvals application late last year.

On the inside, both variants offer a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, which also features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard.

On top of that, there is a premium 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system for an immersive sound experience.

Globally, BYD sold more than 2.2 million battery-electric vehicles in 2025, ahead of Tesla, which delivered just under 1.7 million. The company also recorded strong growth in export volumes, underlining its expansion beyond the increasingly competitive Chinese EV market.

In a recent report, BYD’s GM of branding and PR shared that the company would see a growth of 24% in international sales this year, over its 2025 sales of 1.046 million in markets outside of China, bringing up the total export sales to 1.3 million cars.

With that ambition in mind, markets like Australia will play a role in helping the brand get there this year and offers along with new models will drive further interest in the brand locally.
